The following proposals have now been approved by the ICTV membership

  1. To move the species Human rhinovirus A and Human rhinovirus B from the genus Rhinovirus to the genus Enterovirus and remove the genus Rhinovirus.
  2. To move the three poliovirus serotypes from the species Poliovirus to the species Human enterovirus C species and to remove the Poliovirus species.
  3. To make Human enterovirus C the type species of the family.

The following proposals have been considered by the ICTV EC and comments relayed to the Study Group; see ICTVnet Taxonomic Proposals 04

4a. To create a new species Seneca Valley virus.
4b. To create a new genus, Senecavirus, containing a single species, Seneca Valley virus.
  5. To rename the species Porcine enterovirus A to Porcine sapelovirus. The serotype porcine enterovirus 8 would then be known as porcine sapelovirus (PSV).
  6a. To create a new species Simian sapelovirus containing simian virus (SV) 2, SV16, SV18, SV42, SV44, SV45 & SV49 (these probably represent three types, SSV-1 to SSV-3).
6b. To create a new species Avian sapelovirus containing duck picornavirus TW90A. The single serotype would be called avian sapleovirus (ASV).
6c. To create a new genus, Sapelovirus, containing three species: Porcine sapelovirus, Simian sapelovirus and Avian sapelovirus.
7a. To formally name the species "Avian encephalomyelitis-like viruses" as Avian encephalomyelitis virus.
7b. To remove the species Avian encephalomyelitis virus from the genus Hepatovirus.
7c. To create a new genus, Tremovirus, containing a single species, Avian encephalomyelitis virus.
  8. To create a new species, Bovine rhinitis B virus within the genus Aphthovirus, containing bovine rhinovirus 2 (BRV-2). The single serotype, BRV-2, would then be known as bovine rhinitis B virus (BRBV).
  9. To create a new species, Human rhinovirus C within the genus Enterovirus.

The following proposals have been submitted to the ICTV EC for consideration; see ICTVnet Taxonomic Proposals 02

  10. To create a new species, Duck hepatitis A virus, containing three (sero)types - duck hepatitis virus 1 (DHV-1) and two new duck hepatitis virus (N-DHV) genotypes. The three types would be known as duck hepatitis A virus (DHAV) 1, DHV-2 and DHAV-3.
To create a new genus, Avihepatovirus, containing the single species, Duck hepatitis A virus.

Proposals in preparation (more detailed descriptions will follow as they are prepared)

  11. To split the species Bovine enterovirus into two species, Bovine enterovirus A and Bovine enterovirus B, each containing a number of types.
  12. To create a new species, {name to be decided} within a new genus {name to be decided}, containing seal picornavirus 1 (SePV-1).

Other issues currently being considered by the PSG

  13. The possible creation of a second simian enterovirus species ("Simian enterovirus B"?) containing EV-108 (N125/N203), EV-103 and possibly SV6.
  14. The taxonomic position of bovine rhinovirus (BRV) 1 and BRV-3.
  15. The classification of a new group of human picornaviruses known as cosaviruses (previously named dekaviruses)

Please note: all taxon names must be considered tentative until approved by the ICTV.

Please address comments on any of the above proposals/issues to Nick Knowles (chairman of the Picornaviridae Study Group) or to any of the Study Group Members.
